My Most Authentic Self

Updated: Dec 29, 2019

To the place that my heart calls home

Trying to put the words on paper to describe my time in Playa de Oro is nearly impossible. How can I write about the all encompassing feelings experienced, when I cannot fully even understand them? If I had to sum it up in one sentence I would say that I have never felt more loved, and likewise, never loved more than I have during my time in the village. By saying this, I am not, by any means, implying that I am lacking love at home. I am blessed by wonderful family and friends that I receive and give love to every day. But never in my 24 years of life have I felt more love in my heart than for the people of Playa de Oro. As cliché as it sounds, walking back into that village for my second trip was like being welcomed home. I instantly felt peace in my heart, and for a girl with high-functioning anxiety and a stressful life, I can say that is not a feeling I have often. I was simply content. Caught up in the business of the modern lifestyle I am always feeling rushed to get to the next moment: always wishing for Friday, or 4pm when class gets out, or the next exciting plans I’ve made. There wasn’t a moment during this trip that I was wishing to be anywhere else. I loved every second spent holding Alexander, every moment spent chasing Lois and Josè, and every word I struggled to understand while communicating with Moises. I fell in love with the children and the families of this community and my heart is forever changed because of it.
