Día Ocho

Today was our last day in the village, and although we are sad to see it end, we are thankful for the time we have had. The goodbyes were tough and plenty of tears were shed, but we are happier knowing we are leaving them with hope and love that they are no longer the “forgotten village.” Realizing the water project is becoming a reality, instead of just a dream, we are elated. The project will be finished soon and they will have clean water in the next few months. The school is freshly painted and cleaned and ready for the new school year to start on Monday. The roof is secured so they may have computers in that room. We were able to strengthen connections we had and form new relationships with the people of the village. About 130 patients were cared for medically and given medications and vitamins to help them thrive. We are excited to see our visions coming to life, and look forward to coming back in the near future.

This was my 4th trip to Playa de Oro, each time I visit I get more excited to see my friends that truly have turned into family. Everyone always ask how the trips are, it’s hard to put it into words, it’s something everyone needs to experience for themselves. We go to serve those in the village, but I always feel I receive more. This week I had the opportunity to put my nursing skills to use in the medical clinic, along with using my futbol skills playing with the older boys. Past relationships grew stronger and new relationships and friendships were formed. In the past I mainly worked with the children but since working in the medical clinic I was able to work more with the adults of the community and was able to also see how much they appreciate our help. One memory from this past week I will forever hold in my heart was that twice each day a pregnant woman by the name of Iris came to see me, I would check her blood pressure and blood sugar. Although our communication was limited we formed a strong bond & I look forward to visiting again and seeing her new little one. Not only when I said goodbye to Iris but all of the children as well, many tears were shed, however this time it was a little easier knowing we are leaving them better off. Playa de Oro forever has a place in my heart and I can’t wait to visit again soon! -Jenna Bennett (4th trip)
